Electrum emphasises starting young professionals on the right foot to set them up for career success. We choose to work and invest in youth because we believe they are important contributors to innovation. One of the reasons we started our Internship Programme in 2016 and launched our Graduate Programme in 2018 was to leverage the perspective of younger workers.
Students can experience Electrum through our paid Internship Programme, which is held twice a year for Computer Science students during the winter and summer holidays. The four-week programme exposes them to the working world in a structured manner with the support of a dedicated mentor who facilitates their learning.
Interns get the opportunity to work on real client-facing projects, gain insight into Electrum’s environment, prepare for possible full-time roles, socialise, and collaborate with other young professionals. If we need to fill a specific role, and an intern has shown that they have the ability and worked well in the team, we may extend an offer to join Electrum as a graduate once they have completed their studies.
The Graduate Programme is an initiative designed to engage with young professionals who have recently finished their studies. Graduates join Electrum as permanent employees. They enter a carefully curated programme introducing them to technical skill development, working as part of a team, and operating within the Electrum ecosystem.
Following the initial onboarding period, the Software Engineering graduates work closely with their respective teams, learning the complete product development cycle and implement code onto live systems within their first few months.
Shaaheen Sacoor’s career shows how interns can grow at Electrum. Shaaheen was one of our first interns during his second year at the University of Cape Town. Once he completed his degree, Shaaheen joined the Graduate Programme in 2018. Over time, he grew and developed his skills, leading his own team in 2020. Now, Shaaheen is the Head of Engineering for our Value-Added Services development teams. Here is what Shaaheen had to share about working at Electrum:

The dedicated in-house Knowledge and Learning team ensures our people are empowered to continually grow their professional and interpersonal skills. They provide a regular calendar of learning covering everything from personal leadership training to understanding the payments landscape. By providing our people with the tools and knowledge necessary to work proactively in the way that suits them, they are equipped to achieve their professional goals.
